CASE STUDY: A family’s story
Daisy is 12 and had ADHD and other learning difficulties diagnosed when she was five. Her mother Laura is a GP, and she suspects that she has the condition herself and can also see the signs of it in Daisy’s younger brother:
Five is young by some standards, and Daisy has pretty much been on medication since then. It has helped enormously. When we started on it my husband (also a GP) was not at all keen, so we started with a small dose on school mornings to see what happened. The teacher was a bit pale and horrified when we told her, but it made a massive difference. I would say it just makes a difference to Daisy’s focus and concentration; it has never subdued her. The only problem we have with it is that it does affect her sleep because of nightmares, which does seem cruel.
She was on a small dose for a while and the school could not believe the difference it made. Then we saw a consultant a year later and he said that she was on a piddly dose, and what is more for the sake of family sanity we should use it at home. That completely transformed our family life. She has a younger brother who is 10. I am pretty certain he has ADHD too, but no one wants to know that. He is incredibly fidgety, he has a zero concentration span and he is really hyperactive all over the place. His father doesn’t want to go down that route with his son. The trouble is he is in a school where he is bumping along at the bottom in a major way and they just can’t make sense of it. He doesn’t concentrate, they say, he has to get up and wander around all the time. It is so clear to me that ADHD is his problem, but I am a lone voice. He has problems with friendships. He is a very likeable little fellow, and he has lots of friends, but no real close mates.
We have seen three lots of educational psychologists, and they can’t make any sense of him at all. I think he has some kind of learning issue as well. He can’t tell the time, his reading and writing are gradually getting there but he is way behind his peers. He has no short-term memory. You can tell him something and then you go back to it and it is as if he has never done it before. To me that is a function of having no attention span. He was not concentrating first time round so he has never processed the information. He has been in two schools and never have they been very proactive about it. I really want him to be assessed, even if we don’t go down the medication route. That window for learning for children is really narrow, and I feel so passionately that we could miss the boat.
